The trend of enrollment declines continues to be especially stark among those institutions serving Black, Latino, and Indigenous students and students from low-income backgrounds. Enrollment declines are, of course, only the tip of the iceberg as this disparity has a significant downstream impact on student success. All this contributes to the waning public confidence in the ROI of  higher education.

In this paper, we propose that an important factor in reducing the inequality arising from intergenerational transmission of income, education, and social connections is career awareness and career readiness.
